Week 5 - Hundreds, Collapses and intensity as playoffs race gains momentum

The fifth week of the Indian domestic T20 league saw a number of milestones, including back-to-back hundreds by Shikhar Dhawan and the first five-wicket haul of the season. Hardik Pandya sent out a strong message as he took the knee in support of “Black Lives Matter” against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, while Chennai were knocked out for the first-time ever before reaching the playoffs.

We take a look at the important moments from the past week.

Hundreds, hundreds and more hundreds

Shikhar Dhawan of Delhi Capitals, who did not have a single ton in the tournament prior to the season created history when he became the first cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in 13 seasons of the league. Interestingly, Dhawan had not scored a single hundred prior to this edition.

The Delhi opener got to triple digits in the matches against Chennai and Kings XI Punjab and was unbeaten in both. While DC won the game against Chennai, his efforts went in vain against Punjab as Dhawan did not find any support from the remaining players.

On Sunday, Ben Stokes of Rajasthan Royals too got his ton in a successful run chase of 195 against Mumbai Indians. Opening the innings, the Englishman anchored his knock to perfection and helped his team chase down the target with 10 balls to spare.

Punjab continue their winning run

Kings XI Punjab occupied the last position on the points table after just one win from their first seven games. However, they have managed to script a dramatic turnaround and have a realistic chance of ending in the top four. They have won their last four games at the point of writing, including one that ended with them inching ahead in twin Super Overs.

Punjab got over the line against Sunrisers Hyderabad despite scoring 126 in their first innings, and this turnaround has opened up the table. Punjab now have 10 points and will need to win their remaining games to qualify for the semis.

Varun Chakravarthy with the first five-wicket haul of the year

Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy became the first bowler of the season to pick up 5 wickets. The Tamil Nadu cricketer produced an excellent spell against Delhi Capitals in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, dismissing Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel in quick succession to help his team over the line.

After KKR had scored 194 in their innings, they needed a tight spell from their bowlers to ensure that high-flying Delhi were restricted. Chakravarthy’s efforts ensured that KKR won by 59 runs and consolidated their position in the top half of the table.

An end to a long legacy

Chennai became the first team to be knocked out of the league this year after Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians on Sunday at Abu Dhabi. They had managed to enter the top four in every season since 2008 - barring the two years in 2016 and 2017 when they had been disqualified - and their elimination puts an end to a long-standing legacy.
