Top moments from Week 2

The second week of the Indian domestic tournament was action-packed, with high-octane cricket on offer. The week saw a Super Over game between Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, the emergence of a number of talented youngsters and made Rahul Tewatia a household name.

Here are the talking points from the last week.

Young ‘uns continue to impress

Week 1 had been defined by the performances of Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal, and Week 2 further saw a number of young stars raise their game and impress. Shubman Gill continued his classy batting for KKR, while Ishan Kishan smacked a fine 99 in his maiden game this year for Mumbai Indians.

Sanju Samson, Priyam Garg, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi along with Rahul Tewatia were other names who managed to set the edition alight. Tewatia, in particular, left his mark on the tournament as his team Rajasthan chased down 224 for a win. The all-rounder was struggling to time the ball and was batting on 14 off 21 balls at one stage, but displayed great mettle as he smashed five sixes in an over to take his team over the line.

Mixed fielding efforts

While Week 1 had seen plenty of dropped catches due to sore limbs, Week 2 saw massive improvements in the fielding department. The effort of the week was Nicholas Pooran’s save at the boundary line against Rajasthan Royals, while Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and James Neesham displayed how fielding has improved over the years.

However, there were a couple of astonishing drops as well, with some of the best fielders such as Manish Pandey and Ravindra Jadeja putting down easy catches.

Steep climb for Kings XI Punjab

After two close defeats in their first three games, Kings XI Punjab might have had hopes for a quick turnaround. However, as the edition progresses, their woes have only multiplied, with their death over bowling emerging as their biggest concern.

Against Rajasthan, West Indian Sheldon Cottrell gave away five sixes in the 18th over. Against Mumbai, a few games later, KXIP conceded 89 off the last five overs. Though they brought in Chris Jordan for the game against Chennai, the Englishman proved expensive, going for more than 40 in just three overs. The unit has been benching T20 greats like Chris Gayle and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and they need a way to bring the match-winners back into the XI.

Record run-chase:

The past week also saw Rajasthan Royals pull off a stunning run chase of 224 against Kings XI Punjab - the highest-ever run chase in the League. After Mayank Agarwal had smashed a fine 106 for Punjab, the Rajasthan team needed a couple of heroic efforts to chase the target down. While Samson led the charge upfront, it was Tewatia and Jofra Archer who finished things off with eight sixes in 11 balls to seal a memorable win. RR broke their own record of the highest successful run-chase in the tournament - they had earlier chased down 215 vs Deccan Chargers in 2008.
